Position: School Counsellor
Department: Student Support
Key Responsibilities:
- The School Counsellor reports directly to the Vice Principal as part of the Wellbeing team and has the following key responsibilities and duties:
- Work closely with other members of the team to;
- Actively contribute to ‘Team Around the Child’ TAC meetings, providing professional insight, collaborative planning, and coordinated support strategies.
- evaluate referral of students, discuss needs and options for the most appropriate and available support in each case
- Manage and prioritise a responsive counselling caseload, allocating time and support resources effectively according to student need, safeguarding concerns, and overall wellbeing
- liaise and attend meetings with other departments in the school, external support agencies and professionals as required
- Allocate time between school-wide wellbeing needs assessment and preventative interventions, and the delivery of short-term, solution-focused counselling for individual students and groups (up to six sessions).
- Taylor school counselling programmes by undertaking school wide needs assessment surveys and review of student data e.g. (Bounce Together)
- Develop the school counselling policy with the Well being team.
- Maintain appropriate records for student referrals and ensure confidentiality is maintained in all aspects of work and provide termly quantitative data reports
- Provide timely, evidence-informed support to teaching staff regarding students’ social, emotional and mental health needs
- Provide strategies for effective classroom intervention and wellbeing support.
- Design and deliver parent workshops in response to identified wellbeing needs, supporting understanding of child development, emotional wellbeing, and mental health.
- Provide supportive parent drop-in opportunities for consultation, guidance, and discussion around student wellbeing concerns.
- Work closely with the Vice Principal in providing relevant in-service training for teachers and staff of the school as required
- Undertake professional development in co-ordination with the Vice Principal .
- Develop and maintain key relationships and networks with other schools, counselling functions, support and referral agencies, etc.
Professional Expectations:
- The postholder should possess the following qualities;
- Degree in counselling or equivalent
- Qualification in child and adolescent counselling desirable
- Practical experience of working with young people in a school and/or children's care context post qualification
- Evidence of continued relevant professional development
- Accreditation with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy(BACP), the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP), the American School Counsellor Association (ASCA) or equivalent
- A demonstrated and genuine liking and appreciation of children
- Able to set a good example through presentation and in personal and professional conduct
- Highly developed verbal and written communication skills
- Well-developed consultation skills to work both autonomously and within a multi-professional team according to circumstances
- Resilient, flexible, adaptable and sensitive to the needs of others.
