Role Description: Learning Support (LS) Teacher
Role and Functions
Scope of Role: Foundation to Year 12
Client Focus: Students recommended for Learning Support, Parents of these students, Home Room and Specialist Teachers of these students.
Functions:
In collaboration with the Head of Primary and the Head of Secondary, and Home Room teachers, the Learning Support Teacher develops and implements Support plans for students experiencing difficulties accessing the curriculum.
Such students may have been formally assessed as having a learning disability such as dyslexia or dyscalculia or other diagnosed disability; other students in the client group may have learning needs that are not defined in this way but are due to other causes such as lack of congruity in education systems for students transitioning from one system to another; family mobility and so on.
Students with more special needs may also be included if it is deemed that the AISB resources are adequate to provide for their needs.
1. Role Purpose and Description
1.1 The primary purpose of this role is to provide a range of learning strategies which enable students receiving the services of the LS teacher, to achieve defined outcome targets in particular areas of the curriculum. This group of students may have defined support needs across several areas of the curriculum or they may have a specific learning need that can be ameliorated with particular training in strategies to assist them to achieve planned outcomes.
1.2 To maintain clear communications channels with School leadership through the Line Manager, parents of client students, subject and homeroom teachers.
1.3 To provide suggested teaching strategies and teaching resource suggestions for teachers of the student client group.
1.4 To suggest appropriate school resources to School Leadership through the Line Manager.
2. Method of Operation:
2.1 The Learning Support teacher will be a member of the Student Support Team which includes the EAL Coordinator, the Head of Primary and the Head of Secondary.
2.2 There will be regular meetings of the team and the LS Teacher may be called up to provide advice to teachers of Kindergarten and Nursery on the Soi 20 campus.
2.3 The line manager will provide the operational details regarding students entering Learning Support.
2.4 Delivery of LS – students will receive LS in a variety of modes – 1 to 1; 1 to small group; and in class ‘at the shoulder’ support.
2.5 There will be brief fortnightly reports to Home Room teachers – these can be verbal and written and Fortnightly written reports to parents.
2.6 A ‘class by class’ log of learning activities will be maintained by the LS teacher.
2.7 There will an assessment report for each student included in the student’s official report transcript. This is done on a Semester basis.
2.8 The LS teacher will periodically provide workshops for teachers and Teaching Assistants on how to assist students with learning needs.
3. Reporting:
The LS teacher reports to the Head of Primary.
4. Work Space:
The LS has an individual office/ tutorial space [this is called the Rainbow Learning Room] and is provided with a lap top computer. Resources are also kept in that room.
5. Performance Indicators:
The Head of Primary will evaluate the LS teacher’s performance in the role through the following indicators:
1. 1 The quality of communication with LS stake holders
2. 2 The quality and effectiveness of individual LS plans for individual students.
3. 3 The standard of data maintained on the learning development of each student.
