Role Specific Overview

The Head of Thai provides strategic and operational leadership for Thai Language, Culture and History across DCBK. The postholder ensures that the curriculum meets the requirements of the Thai Ministry of Education (MOE), reflects the expectations of a high-quality international school and supports the College’s licence, quality-assurance and accreditation obligations.

All Heads of Subject are expected to live the College values and contribute positively to whole college aims. The Head of Thai leads provision for students learning Thai as a first language and Thai as an additional or foreign language. The role combines excellent classroom practice with curriculum leadership, team development, accurate regulatory documentation and a visible contribution to college life through Thai cultural events and community engagement.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Safeguarding wellbeing and professional conduct

  • Actively promote the safety and wellbeing of all students and comply fully with the College safeguarding and child-protection policies, reporting procedures and safer-working practices.

  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and model the highest standards of integrity, confidentiality and conduct.

  • Uphold health and safety requirements, complete risk assessments and near-miss or accident reports when required and ensure that registers and records are accurate.

  • Ensure that Thai provision responds effectively to first-language learners, additional-language learners and students requiring Additional Educational Needs support, and that teaching is adjusted appropriately.

  • Undertake supervisory, pastoral and Form Tutor responsibilities as required, maintaining an effective duty of care.

  • Apply the College behaviour policy consistently, using restorative and developmentally appropriate approaches.

  • Communicate clearly, respectfully and promptly with students, parents, colleagues and external partners, both verbally and in writing.

Leadership and management of Thai

  • Uphold the College Vision, Mission and Core Values and develop a clear vision for Thai Language, Culture and History aligned with whole-college and Primary School priorities.

  • Lead an evidence-informed Thai Department improvement plan using assessment information, lesson visits, work scrutiny, student voice, parent feedback and staff reflection.

  • Lead and manage Thai Department staff so that teaching, learning and assessment are consistently high quality, inclusive and aligned with College policies, MOE requirements and DCBK learning principles.

  • Set clear expectations, allocate responsibilities fairly, monitor delivery and provide timely support, challenge, and follow-up.

  • Lead regular and purposeful department meetings that address both operational priorities and longer-term improvement.

  • Build a collaborative culture in which colleagues share practice, innovate thoughtfully, evaluate impact and contribute to a common vision.

  • Support the induction, coaching and professional development of team members, including the performance development and review process.

  • Contribute to workforce planning and lead recruitment, selection and induction within the Thai Department in partnership with the Thai School Director, Head of Primary and HR.

  • Keep the line manager and relevant College leaders informed of progress, priorities, risks and support required.

  • Coordinate subject resources, information, shared planning and administrative systems so that the department operates efficiently.

Curriculum and assessment leadership

  • Collaborate with the Thai Department to design and oversee an engaging, coherent and progressive Thai Language, Culture and History curriculum aligned with MOE requirements and international-school expectations.

  • Establish and review appropriate pathways for students learning Thai as a first language and Thai as an additional or foreign language, with clear progression expectations.

  • Ensure effective differentiation for beginners, first-language learners, advanced learners and students from varied linguistic and educational backgrounds.

  • Lead curriculum review and documentation, ensuring that schemes of learning, unit plans and resources are current, well sequenced and accessible to the team.

  • Ensure that assessment is valid, proportionate and consistently applied, with useful moderation and standardisation processes.

  • Use quantitative and qualitative evidence to evaluate student progress, identify gaps, set priorities and plan appropriate intervention or extension.

  • Oversee accurate, constructive and timely reporting to students and parents, including clear next steps for learning.

  • Maintain current knowledge of MOE regulations, Thai curriculum requirements, ONESQA expectations and relevant international-school developments, advising College leaders on implications and required actions.

  • Lead the preparation, review and maintenance of Thai Department documentation for school licensing, MOE review, ONESQA quality assurance and accreditation visits.

  • Attend curriculum, academic and leadership meetings as required and implement agreed actions within the department.

Teaching and learning

  • Model excellent Thai teaching and maintain a teaching allocation appropriate to the leadership responsibilities of the role.

  • Teach Thai as a first language and/or Thai as an additional or foreign language, as required.

  • Plan and deliver rigorous, engaging and differentiated learning with clear objectives that develops listening, speaking, reading and writing through Thai culture, customs, literature, history and real-life contexts.

  • Know students as individuals and recognise how learning is influenced by physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development, language profile and cultural background.

  • Build positive relationships and create authentic opportunities for student voice, choice and agency.

  • Embed the College learning principles in classroom practice and use evidence and current educational research to improve learning.

  • Teach well-structured lessons with clear learning intentions, appropriate pace and challenge, purposeful practice, and meaningful real-world contexts.

  • Respond flexibly to assessment and feedback, adapting teaching and providing intervention or extension when needed.

  • Use educational technology and learning platforms confidently and selectively to enhance, rather than replace, effective language learning.

  • Set purposeful and appropriately challenging independent learning or homework and provide timely feedback that helps students improve.

Monitoring recording and reporting

  • Use baseline information and ongoing teacher assessment to plan teaching, set appropriate targets and ensure that all students make progress.

  • Use a balanced range of formative and summative assessment strategies to build an accurate picture of learning.

  • Provide regular, timely and constructive verbal and written feedback so that students understand their progress, next steps and responsibility for learning.

  • Apply College policies on assessment, grading, reporting and academic integrity consistently.

  • Maintain accurate records and provide clear updates on individual or cohort progress to colleagues and parents when required.

  • Where relevant, ensure that internally and externally assessed work is prepared, moderated and submitted accurately and on time.

College community and wider contribution

  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues across phases and departments to support continuity, interdisciplinary learning and whole-college priorities.

  • Strengthen the profile of Thai through assemblies, cultural events, national celebrations, competitions, trips, partnerships and other enrichment opportunities.

  • Lead or coordinate Thai extracurricular activities and support the wider College ECA programme.

  • Promote Thai language, culture and history in an inclusive and internationally minded way, strengthening students’ intercultural understanding and connection with the host country.

  • Develop constructive relationships with parents and support opportunities for families to understand and contribute to students’ language learning.

  • Contribute to the College extracurricular and service-learning programme, including at least one hour of extracurricular activity per week or the equivalent expectation set by the College.

  • Attend parent teacher student consultations and other College events, providing constructive feedback and supporting colleagues as appropriate.

  • Build effective professional relationships within DCBK and across the wider Dulwich and EiM network, sharing expertise and good practice.

  • Undertake other reasonable duties consistent with the nature and level of the role, as requested by the Thai School Director, Head of Primary or Head of College.

Budget and resources

  • Prepare and manage the annual Thai Department budget in line with College procedures and approved priorities.

  • Plan the ordering, care, deployment and review of textbooks, digital resources, equipment and learning materials.

  • Ensure that expenditure is purposeful, appropriately authorised and represents value for money.

Performance development and professional learning

  • Meet the requirements of the annual performance development process and lead the process effectively for assigned team members.

  • Set measurable objectives, evaluate progress through evidence and reflection, and support colleagues to develop professional agency and self-direction.

  • Complete mandatory and role-relevant professional learning and maintain an accurate record of professional development.

  • Remain current in language pedagogy, curriculum developments, safeguarding and effective subject leadership.

Qualification and Experience Required

Essential Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Thai Language, Thai Education, Education or a related field.

  • Recognised teaching qualification and eligibility for the professional licence required under Thai regulations.

  • Native or near-native Thai, with excellent spoken and written communication skills.

  • Professional working proficiency in English.

  • Minimum 5-7 years’ successful experience leading a subject team or Thai programme.

  • Proven experience teaching Thai across different age groups.

  • Experience teaching both Thai first-language and additional-language learners.

  • Strong knowledge of Thai-language pedagogy, curriculum development, assessment and student-progress monitoring.

  • Good understanding of MOE curriculum requirements and ONESQA quality-assurance standards.

  • Strong leadership, communication, organisation and relationship-management skills.

  • Commitment to safeguarding, inclusive education and DCBK’s values.

Desirable

  • Master’s degree or postgraduate qualification in Thai Education, Curriculum Development, Educational Leadership or a related field.

  • Experience working in an international or bilingual school.

  • Experience preparing documentation for MOE inspections, school licensing or ONESQA reviews.

  • Experience coaching teachers and leading professional development.

  • Experience organising Thai cultural events and extracurricular activities.

  • Confidence in using technology to support teaching, learning and departmental administration.
