Position Title: Head of Middle School

Reporting To: Principal / Head of School

Department: Middle School / Secondary Division

Role Purpose:

The Head of Middle School provides academic leadership, pastoral oversight, and operational management for the Middle School division. This role ensures a safe, inclusive, and dynamic learning environment that supports students in their academic, social, and emotional growth during early adolescence. The Head of Middle School works collaboratively with faculty, students, parents, and senior leadership to implement the school’s mission, uphold high standards, and foster a cohesive and positive school culture.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership and Administration

Lead the day-to-day operations of the Middle School, ensuring smooth delivery of academic and co-curricular programs.
Provide instructional leadership to support effective teaching, learning, and assessment practices across subject areas.
Oversee the implementation of the curriculum (e.g., IB MYP or other frameworks), ensuring vertical and horizontal alignment.
Monitor student progress, behaviour, and well-being through data-driven practices and interventions.
Collaborate with leadership to develop school improvement plans, policies, and procedures.
 

Faculty and Staff Management

Recruit, mentor, and evaluate Middle School faculty and support staff.
Facilitate regular faculty meetings, professional development, and collaborative planning.
Foster a collegial and reflective culture that promotes innovation, professional growth, and shared responsibility.
 

Student Support and Well-being

Promote a student-centred environment that values agency, voice, and respect.
Support the social-emotional development of students through proactive pastoral care and behaviour guidance.
Oversee the advisory program and contribute to student leadership, service, and extracurricular opportunities.
Ensure systems are in place to support students with diverse learning, language, and well-being needs.
 

Parent and Community Engagement

Communicate regularly and effectively with parents regarding academic programs, student progress, and school events.
Address parent concerns in a timely and transparent manner.
Foster a strong sense of community and partnership between home and school.
Represent the Middle School in parent meetings, school functions, and community events.
 

Strategic and Organisational Responsibilities

Contribute to school-wide strategic planning and decision-making as a member of the leadership team.
Ensure compliance with accreditation, health and safety, and safeguarding requirements.
Manage budgets and resources responsibly to support Middle School programs.
Lead or contribute to special projects, initiatives, and committees as required.

Required Qualifications and Competencies:

Master’s degree in Education, Educational Leadership, or a related field.
Valid teaching certification and a strong background in middle years education.
Minimum of 5 years of teaching experience and 2+ years in a leadership role.
Experience with international curricula (e.g., IB MYP, Cambridge, or similar) strongly preferred.
Proven ability to lead and inspire teams, build trust, and manage change effectively.
Strong understanding of adolescent development and inclusive education practices.
Excellent organisational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
