G E N E R A L      D E S C R I P T I O N

RIS seeks an enthusiastic and engaging part-time Elementary/Middle School Japanese teacher for our Elementary and Middle School programs who will lead, inspire, and promote student learning. Specifically, this role will primarily teach Middle School Japanese lessons covering beginner and intermediate-level classes and one Grade 5 Japanese quarter-long beginner class.

The applicant should be an experienced, certified teacher currently working at the upper Elementary or Middle School levels. Additionally, the candidate should be knowledgeable about subject-area content, best practices in an inquiry-based approach, differentiation, and assessment for student learning. The applicant should have experience with collaborative curriculum designs and be well-versed in unit development using backward planning. The applicant will collaborate regularly with department team members, subject teachers, and school leaders to ensure that instruction meets the needs of each student.

Enthusiasm for engaging Middle School learners
Experience and certification for teaching Japanese language and culture at the upper Elementary or Middle School level
Proven track record of success in advancing students’ proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing Japanese
Plan and deliver high-quality Japanese language lessons aligned with curriculum standards (ACTFL framework)
Use a variety of instructional strategies to support language acquisition and cultural understanding
Contribute to the school community through assemblies and school traditions, such as the Japanese Festival
Best practices in:

  • Inquiry-based approaches
  • Differentiation for all learners
  • Assessment for student learning

Proven ability to develop and deliver successful academic programs
Participation in current and relevant professional development
Ability to ensure instruction meets the needs of all students through data-informed decisions
Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, teachers, and other stakeholders
Experience in collaborative curriculum design and backward planning

Current Elementary or Middle School license or certification for teaching Japanese

At least two years of experience teaching and working at an accredited Secondary School

Bachelor’s degree in Japanese, Japanese Language Education, World Languages, or a related field

Master's in Japanese, Japanese Language Education, World Languages, or a related field

Proficiency in Japanese (native or near-native fluency)
