About the role

Position Objective:

The role of the Deputy Head of School is to:

  • Work collaboratively with the Head of School ensuring the effective implementation of the strategic direction and operations of the school
  • To ensure consistency in standards and expectations across the school, contributing to the desired culture and ethos
  • To deputise for the Head of School in their absence
  • To take the strategic lead on the pastoral provision for the whole school
  • Ensure safeguarding is maintained as the highest priority

To ensure the school remains a place where students learn to thrive and become confident and compassionate global citizens ready to make a positive impact on the world and who follow the school values of : Kindness, friendship, respect, responsibility, courage and honesty.

To promote a community where everyone feels seen, heard and celebrated.

Key Responsibilities:

Line Management of:

  • Learning Support Lead
  • EAL services
  • Line manage KS1 lead and EYFS lead
  • PSHE Coordinators (Early year/Primary)
  • Curriculum leads (science/maths/ed tech/literacy/phonics/art/wellbeing)
  • Teaching and Learning

Leadership:

  • Drive high standards and expectations of all members of the community
  • Set the tone for operational and academic excellence
  • Work alongside the Head of School to create a culture of care, support and high expectations
  • Development of an outstanding learning support system
  • Lead teaching and learning across the school, being up to date with best practise and innovative learning pedagogy

Safeguarding (deputy DSL)

  • Deliver and implement high quality safeguarding provision in line with Cognita and regional expectations
  • Work with the DSL and SLT to ensure effective safeguarding practices are implemented with consistency across the school
  • Support the DSL to deliver training and support for staff throughout the school year in line with the safeguarding training matrix
  • Support the DSL to manage safeguarding and child protection files and ensure that they are regularly reviewed and updated
  • Provide information and support to parents on the latest safeguarding trends
  • Support the wellbeing lead to ensure that the provision for PSHE is embedded across the school

Pastoral

  • To ensure the vision and values for the school permeate across the student and staff body
  • To oversee the strategic direction and provision of pastoral care across the whole school and ensure this is delivered with coherence and consistency
  • To work with parents and families to support students wellbeing
  • To work with PSHE coordinators on the vertical alignment of PSHE and RSE through the school

Parents and Students

  • To work with parents to solve problems and build strong relationships
  • To deliver at open house events to promote the school to new families
  • To present to students in assembly
  • To assist in organising whole school events
  • To assist students with concerns and support them in resolving conflict

Other Desirable Experience

  • Experience of wellbeing/RSE provisions in an International School would be a distinct advantage
  • Excellent communication skills, multi-tasking and time management
  • An ability to work as a part of a team and an interest in participating in the wider school community
  • An ability to be flexible and adaptable
  • An ability to problem solve
  • An ability to build string caring relationships with students, parents and staff
  • A passion to ensure things are the best that they can be

Safeguarding

• The job holder’s responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for whom s/he is responsible, or with whom they come into contact will be to adhere to and ensure compliance with the relevant Cognita Safeguarding; Child Protection Policy and Procedures at all times.

• If in the course of carrying out the duties of the role, the job holder identifies any instance that a child is suffering or likely to suffer significant harm either at school or at home, s/he must report any concerns to the School’s Designated Safeguarding Lead or to the Head of School so that a referral can be made accordingly to the relevant third party services.
